Fort Steele Heritage Town.

Fort Steele Heritage Town represents life in the Kootenays around the 1890s, over 60 buildings have been renovated, rebuilt and some moved here from other parts of the Kootenays. The large water wheel, which is the first thing you see as you approach Fort Steele was originally used at The Perry Creek Gold Mine 25 miles away.
The old brewery now a cafe/gift shop and information centre for the town.

This is the Wild Horse Theatre, in the summer months they put on a show every afternoon.

 The livery stable.

The British Columbia Government Building.

The court room in the government building and below the cells.

Looking into one of the cells, looks like the prisoners have better quarters than the enlisted constables and sergeants across the road at the Mounted Police Barracks.

The Kootenay River and just above the river the Ferry Office. The charge to get across the river to Fort Steele was $5.00 per person $10 per animal. The information you get says how expensive that was back in the 1870s.  Maybe thats why BC Ferries charge so much today 'always have-always will'
The Catholic Church and the village school.

Inside the church and the school room,  The school was built in1898 and originally was on the other side of the street. At one point they had over 90 kids in this one room with just one teacher.

Wasa Hotel, Museum and art gallery, this is a replica of the original hotel which stood in Wasa a village just to the north of Fort Steele.
The Bandstand.

The city Bakery built in 1922 to replace the old one which is next door,  the oven is 15ft. by 15ft. and 8ft. tall. The building on the right is The International Hotel, this is a reconstruction of the 1898 building on the same site.

The original Anglican Church, used also as the village hall and the first school, this is from the 1860s.
These have not been renovated yet, its an ongoing project here.
