Whitehorse Day 2, The Yukon.

Today we did the tourist bit and had a really good time.
The first photo is of the Yukon River taken in downtown Whitehorse. Just behind where I was standing  taking this photo is The SS Klondike, the last and biggest steam sternwheeler to sail the river between Whitehorse and Dawson City.

Its a magnificent old boat.

Look at the size of the paddle wheel, this boat weighed just under 3000 metric tonnes and only drew a meter of water.
This barge would be pushed in front of the steamer allowing it to transport more cargo. The journey to Dawson City loaded with food and booze and other domestic articles took one and a half to two days, going with the flow of the river. The journey back loaded with gold and silver took three and a half to four days against the current, the cargo was no heavier, the current is vert strong and fast.

The different modes of transport over the years, this bush plane flew over The Klondike whilst we were there
A change of subject from transport,  a couple of shots of the park by the river, a totem pole and a flower bed, a very enjoyable morning, picnic in the park a walk down town and a visit to the information centre.  On to the gas station to fill up $1.40 a litre (cheaper than BC.) Our propane refilled and we are all set to move on tomorrow.
