The Alaska Highway, Day 4, Toad River

We had a late start from Fort Nelson, the beast had to go into the garage for an oil change and service, we have travelled 7800 km. since we bought it, it seams these big V8s have to have their oil changed every 5000miles/8000km. They use a lot of fuel and need a lot of tlc. My Ford/Hymer diesel camper was once a year or 24000km. which ever came first and I think the Honda car we have was the same, why the big difference?
The road from Fort Nelson rose gently for around 30km and then we went up and up and up, I thought we were never going to get to the top. The gradient wasn't very steep it just went on for ever, I didn't clock the distance but must have been about 10km.

At the top looking back down the road. From here the scenery got better and i'm afraid the road got worse, lots of repair work going on, frost heaves, washed out sections and quite a few gravel sections.

The road ahead.

The next stop was the highlight of the drive, Stone Mountain Park and Summit Lake.
This place had the best campsite we have seen on our trip, made us wish we had our little Hymer, no electricity, no water, no sanidump just the views and solitude, but no good for our fiver, so on we go to Toad river
Last look at Summit Lake.

Toad River Camping, a good site with friendly people.

Toad river airfield, alongside the highway and the campsite.
The distance travelled today 182km.
