Today we visited Fort Rodd Hill the main artillery fortification guarding the entrance to Esquimalt harbour and naval base. Built in 1895 to 1897 with 3 battery's and guns that rose above the walls to fire and dropped down to be reloaded - very clever. The sight has not been restored and is as it was when the army left in 1956. One of the original 6inch guns is still in place, together with the World War 2 guns in the central battery.
Looking out over the Juan de Fuca
Strait from the upper battery, this gun is the original gun, though it now sits on a modern frame.

The gun in the foreground is one of the original 12 pounders the khaki housing is hiding one of the 2nd. war twin-barrelled 6 pounders, there jobs were hit the smaller boats trying to enter the harbour.

The tatty looking hut is hiding a searchlight, they hid them in these buildings made to look like old fishing huts.
