Continuing our exploration of the Ottawa Countryside we have traveled about 30 minuets north west of Ottawa to Pakenham to see its stone bridge, these bridges common as muck in Europe are very rare in North America, this is a magnificent 5 span example one of only 3 on the continent.
We had our picnic here looking at this view, the Mississippi flowing on down to the Ottawa River. It has no connection with the big river down south, only about 200km long but very fast flowing being fed by around 250 lakes along its length. Years ago had a string of mills along its length, now only Hydro plants.
In the village of Pakenham, this wonderful church. No pics. from inside, it was locked, shame its said to be beautiful inside.
We have moved up river and are now about 45km from Ottawa in the town of Almonte an old mill town with a very interesting name. The town is named after a mexican general, Juan Almonte who fought in the Mexican Wars, he was seen as a "David" fighting a "Goliath" A person the Canadians of that time took to their hearts.
All the mills are closed now, the buildings are still there, converted into restaurants and apartments, its a very upmarket little town.
This is the old post office, this street has lots of antique shops. In fact I don't think I've ever seen so many in one place.
This is real, parked up on the river at Pakenham.
