Vancouver Island

The last couple of days have been taken up with doing odd jobs on the trailer and trecking to the diy shop for all the bits and pieces. Today we had a visit from our friends Donnie and Kees from Gabriola Island, a real break, visited Goldstream again, more salmon than last week its a very busy river, and a great lunch at The 4 Mile Pub. Ogden Point to Cattle Point, Victoria.

 A break from the rain of the last couple of days, we have blue skies and sunshine. As we are going to a concert at the University this evening we decided
to leave a little early and drive round the coast, our first stop is the breakwater at Ogden Point.

Mile zero of the Trans Canada Highway the other end is St. Johns, Newfoundland a long way!

 

This young chap is Terry Fox the second most famous Canadian of all time.

 

A few years ago there was a poll of some sort to find the most famous Canadian it was won by Tommy Douglas, during his time as Premier of Saskatchewan he introduced the first universal health care which became the blueprint for the Canada wide system they have now. Terry Fox came second. That shows the Canadian lifestyle in a nutshell, picking two humanitarians as the most famous people. 

I wonder if the American people will hold Mr. Obama with such respect in 50 years time.

Enough of that , this is supposed to be a travel blog not a political rant (I might just get started on French politics and there be no holding me back)

Is this the tallest totem in the world?

 

We think this is an American Wigeon, it was swimming in the shallows at Cattle Point.

 

Another for my birdy buddies, we have no idea what this is, iBird is no help.

The concert we went to was an International Guitar Night, 4 acoustic guitarists from Argentina, Italy, UK and USA. What a brilliant  performance.

Salmon & Vancouver Fog.

The salmon run has started in Goldstream Park so change of plan and off we go to look at the salmon.  











Salmon soup, there are so many salmon here all milling around it just looks like boiling water.

 

A couple of salmon here swimming alone looking for some where to spawn in peace and quiet.

 

Along the river side there are birds and gulls feeding on the salmon roe and the salmon themselves after  they die when they have finished spawning.

Mr. & Mrs Mallard enjoying there own feast, I couldn't see what they were eating but I think it must have been the roe.

  

About three weeks ago when we last visited this park I took a picture of Mount Finlayson, it looks a little different today with the Vancouver fog sitting on the summit.
